"Lend Me Your Ears"

Jane

Dee and I were out driving and talking about what it was like when we were growing up and what chores we had to do. Dee said that Janie being the oldest girl in the family probably had a lot to do and didn’t have much free time. I said quickly that she had plenty of free time; because she was always singing and dancing in the kitchen. Dee objected to my answer. I said that I was just kidding. If you think about it Janie was the only girl among the eldest four and all the boys worked at the ice house from a very early age. I expect that from 1950 to 1960 she helped mom a lot with changing and washing diapers as well as kitchen work. I seem to recall that she did her dancing with a dishcloth in her hand. The times were not always easy, but it sure made you feel good to have a person like Janie around.

Thanks, Janie - that is one of my fondest memories.
