Well, since it's Easter season, my last little story
will be about Easter as I remember it when I was a
girl. The house on Eureka was just two bedrooms, a
bathroom, living room and a kitchen. For those who
don't remember the kitchen was where the dining room
is now. Going out the back door there door there were
cement steps. And at the bottom and off to the side of
these steps is where we put our Easter nests. There
were many beautiful spring wild flowers in our yard
and next door. At that time there were still many
vacant lots. So there was no shortage of beautiful
wild flowers, from the pale pink of buttercups and
many blues especially bluebonnets to several different
purple and some bright yellow. Well we would collect
any of the flowers we wanted to make an Easter nest.
You formed the nest by placing flowers in a circle
with the blooms facing out and the stems in. To this
day I can't picture anything more beautiful at Easter.
If the weather was bad we put our nests just inside
the back door and even had our Easter egg hunt inside.
We always dyed eggs on Saturday. Mama loved Easter and
she could come up with the most beautiful colors on
her eggs. Then we rubbed shortening on the eggs and
the shine seemed to brighten the colors. Mama made
baskets for us out of oatmeal boxes. On Easter morning
there were eggs and candy in our nests and eggs hidden
all around the back yard. Also, Mama sewed all the
girls a beautiful new dress and shirts for the boys. I
remember singing the old song"In Your Easter Bonnet". And in the fifties we did wear them. So on Easter
everything felt colorful and cheery. We hunted eggs,
ate a few for breakfast and then went to church. What
could be more perfect? A beautiful morning topped off
with the celebration of our Lord's Resurrection. He
blessed us then and He continues to bless us all
today.
I pray you all have, or if this is printed after April
8th, had a beautiful and blessed Easter.
Love,
Janie
