"Lend Me Your Ears"

The Creative Granny

Where most little girls growing up have new fluffy dresses, bright shinny toys and Barbie dolls with all the extras, my experience was different. I am sure Terry (Tesa), Cheri and Judy will know where I am going with in this story. Now that I think about it everyone has a memory similar to this one.

Growing up I didn’t even consider the idea of going into a department store to buy a new dress for any occasion. I knew that either Granny or my mom would come up with something special. I look back now at my class pictures and every dress was a Granny or Janie original. They could have been famous!

Growing up Terry and I loved to play in the backroom with our Barbie dolls. We would spend hours in our own “Barbie World”. That is because Granny was the best at being creative. All of our Barbie clothes and furniture were homemade. The dresses fit perfect and the furniture was usually an old left over 2 by 4, spools from the thread, foam, cans left over from supper, or scraps of material. You would not believe the things Granny came up with. We had a BLAST!

Growing up around Christmas I couldn’t wait to see what Granny had made for me this year. Santa Claus was great but Granny’s toys would last forever! I knew she would come through with a new Barbie dress. How could she sew such small dresses?

Now when Danielle came into the picture I couldn’t believe my eyes one Christmas evening when she opened a gift and there appeared two Barbie beds, pillows to match and blankets. I do still have all of them around and Danielle even knows where all of her Barbie dolls are kept. When we talked about this the other night she could describe the toys as if they were still sitting in her bedroom. What a great memory for her as well!

As I look back now and go through these old pictures I am sure there were times I would have rather had that store bought dress especially on Homecoming, but I can’t think of a time I couldn’t wait for Granny to come in the room with a new creation of Barbie dresses or toys for our Barbie dolls. I wish I would have saved some of these Barbie items but I will always cherish my memories of her.

Over the years Granny continued to design and make toys, dresses and lots of baby blankets for all of us and even our children. God really shared something special with us all, What a Creative Granny!
