I remember some wonderful times playing baseball in our backyard on Eureka. Of course, we didn’t have a fancy bat and ball. Mama was very inventive so our baseball was made of old torn socks which she wound tightly and stitched to make it as smooth as she could. And our bat was an old grubbing hoe handle. We had so much fun playing “work up.” And we would even get our small brothers and sisters to play with us. I’m sure some of us remember the old barrel that we would balance and walk on. Mama also would play volleyball when she was young. The volleyball court was facing the opposite direction.
When we were very young Clay, David, Walt, and I loved playing cowboys and Indians, running wild in the back yard. But the fondest memory is the baseball games.
